  • Embry-Riddle Aviation 101 - "Aviation 101 is a free online course comprised of nine video lessons, which will introduce you to a variety of topics in aviation - Aircraft Systems, Aerodynamics, Light Instruments, Airports, Airspace, Radio Communication & ATC, Aeromedical, Aviation Weather, Performance and Navigation.
  • University of North Dakota - Interactive Trainers  - Provides interactive training in the area of aerodynamics, checklists, E6-B Flight Computer, Electrical Systems, Technical Aviation Communications, and Engines.
  • VOR Simulator- VOR and VOR navigation typically is a difficult concept for students to initially understand. Having a visual conception and practice helps to to increase understanding and proficiency.

Private Pilot - Knowledge Exam Prep

  • Free Online Practice Test -  "Sporty's Study Buddy" will prepare you for the FAA knowledge (or written) test like no other study tool available.   • Knowledge Testing (Computer Testing) Supplements - This FAA published document provides all the charts and figures for the Private Pilot Knowledge test. The testing center will provide a copy for the the actual test.

  • FAA Student Pilot Guide - "This publication is intended to serve as a guide for prospective student pilots and for those already engaged in flight training. This guide presents in “how to” fashion, general procedures for obtaining FAA student pilot, sport pilot, recreational
    pilot, and private pilot certificates.
  • FAA  Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge - "The Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge provides basic knowledge that is essential for pilots. This handbook introduces pilots to the broad spectrum of knowledge that will be needed as they progress in their pilot training."
  • FAA Airplane Flying Handbook - The Airplane Flying Handbook provides basic knowledge that is essential for pilots. This handbook introduces basic pilot skills and knowledge that are essential for piloting airplanes. It provides information on transition to other airplanes and the operation of various airplane systems. This handbook is developed to assist student pilots learning to fly airplanes.
  • FAA Aeronautical Chart User's Guide - This Chart User's Guide is an introduction to the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) aeronautical charts and publications. It is useful to new pilots as a learning aid, and to experienced pilots as a quick reference guide.
  • FAA - Aviation Handbooks & Manuals - All other Important and relevant handbooks and manuals can be found here for free that will provide the necessary knowledge to earn a private pilot certificate and beyond.

Student Pilot Certificate 

  • Student Pilot's Certificate Requirements - Before you can fly solo one must receive their student pilot certificate. You do not need your student pilot certificate to start taking flying lessons. The FAA website will provide an overview and answer questions regarding how to acquire a student pilot certificate.

Remote Pilot Certificate & Exam Prep

  • Free Online Practice Test - "King Schools' test question database covers all the FAA subjects that you'll be tested on including — airspace, risk management, weather and FAA regulations."
  • 3DR FAA Training: Review our FAA Part 107 drone pilot study guides to help you prepare. This is the best place to prepare for the test. These are many of the sections: UAS Regulations, Airspace, Airport Operations, AWR, Weather, Load and Performance, Airspace Authorization
  • Knowledge Testing (Computer Testing) Supplements - This FAA published document provides all the charts and figures for the Private Pilot Knowledge test. The testing center will provide a copy for the the actual test.
  • Certificated Remote Pilots including Commercial Operators - FAA provides an overview of the process and requirements to earn a Remote Pilot Certificate. 
  • Airmen Certification Standards - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has published the Remote Pilot – small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Airman Certification Standard (ACS) document to communicate the aeronautical knowledge standards for certification and recurrent knowledge testing for a Remote Pilot Certificate with an sUAS rating.
  • Knowledge Test Instructions - Remote Pilot Knowledge Test Guide, dated February 2017, provides information for preparing you to take the following airman knowledge test (AKT). 
  • Knowledge Test Study Guide - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has published the Remote Pilot – Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Study Guide to communicate the knowledge areas you need to study to prepare to take the Remote Pilot Certificate with an sUAS rating airman knowledge test.
  • Knowledge Test Sample Questions - The following sample questions for Unmanned Aircraft General (UAG) are suitable study material for the Remote Pilot Certificate
    with a small UAS Rating.

Grants and Scholarships

  • Aviation Grants and Scholarships  - Aviation is not cheap but there are many scholarships and grants available for all fields of aviation. Some of the scholarships are specifically for high school students pursuing their private pilot certificate.

Associations, Organizations, Curriculum 

  • AOPA - AV8RS - This organization provides a free membership for youth to help foster the interest and growth of aviation. "AOPA AV8RS receive a digital subscription to Flight Training magazine; access to member-only content on www.aopa.org and flightraining.aopa.org for research and interesting stories."
  •  EAA - Youth Education - The Experimental Aircraft Association Youth Education is committed to "inspiring young people to experience the freedom of flight is one of EAA’s greatest obligations to assure a strong future for aviation." This organization provides free flights to youth through their Young Eagles program, scholarships, internships, college and career planning and opportunities, camps, and more.
