Aviation 1

Course Overview
The world of aviation is an innovating and exciting field of study and continues to develop exponentially. Current reports show that in the next fifteen to twenty years there will be a demand for 95,000 pilots with a projected shortage in pilots to fulfill those jobs. Therefore, this course provides the required training to allow students to take the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Private Pilot Knowledge Exam and pursue their private pilot certificate. In addition, this course serves to expose students to the various career paths in aviation such as aircraft electrical technicians, manufacturing engineers, airport operation management, air traffic control, maintenance technician, quality control, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

 

High School Credit
This course meets the College Preparatory Elective “G” requirement for the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) system.

 

Career Technical Education
This course meets the Career Technical Education (CTE) Transportation – Operations requirement for the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) system. Aviation 1 – Ground is SJVA’s CTE Concentrator course for the Aviation Pilot Pathway

 

Course Topics

Introduction to Aviation, Aeronautical Decision-Making, Aircraft Construction, Principles of Flight, Aerodynamics of Flight, Flight Controls, Aircraft Systems, Flight Instruments, Flight Manuals and Other Documents, Weight and Balance, Aircraft Performance, Weather Theory, Aviation Weather Services, Airport Operations, Airspace, Navigation, Aeromedical Factors

 

Course Outcomes 

  • Prepared to pass the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam that will be taken at the end of Aviation 2. 
  • Prepared to pass the FAA Small UAS – Remote Pilot Certificate that can be taken at the end of Aviation 2 
  • Aware of various post-secondary education and career opportunities within the aviation industry.
  • Training in SJVA's Advanced Aviation Training Device from a certified flight instructor. A total of 2.5 hours in the AATD can be counted towards the Private Pilot Certificate.
 

FAA Approved Training Device
Student in Aviation 1 are provided training in Precision Flight Control’s CRX MAX Advanced Aviation Training Device. Students can credit 2.5 hours of their time in the training device with a flight instructor towards earning their Private Pilot Certificate.
