COURSE DESCRIPTION

The AVID Elective (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teaches students critical-thinking skills for success in rigorous academic curriculum. AVID Students have great potential and generally fit into one or more of the following categories:
 
1. Middle to high academic range
2. A desire and willingness to succeed in college prep and Pre-AP/AP courses
3. A desire to go to a higher institution of learning upon graduation from high school
4. Individual determination to be successful in each of their scheduled classes
AVID PROJECTS
 
Each class had 1 month to research a university or college and decorated their class door with a message.

WICOR
 
AVID students receive instruction in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading (WICOR) strategies that are necessary for academic success. In-class tutoring sessions are part of the AVID elective to support student success in all the student’s classes. Field trips to colleges/universities and other venues of interest/suitability are also part of the curriculum. Students must maintain eligibility to attend.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
 
AVID Learning Outcomes: AVID develops, refines, and utilizes higher level writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR) strategies in order to achieve optimal outcomes in critical thinking, learning, and retention of academic material.
LEARNING GOALS
 
Academic success in college preparatory courses.
Enrollment in college preparatory courses throughout middle and high school to ensure enrollment in a four-year college or university upon graduation.
BEING APART OF AVID IS AN HONOR
 
1. AVID students will attend every class, prepared with all class materials; this includes binder, supplies, class assignments, homework, resources and papers. Additionally, they should demonstrate the following collegiate behaviors:
 
2. Individual determination and personal responsibility for their learning
 
3. Commitment to work hard, even when the work is hard
 
4. Taking and interacting with class notes and writing and reflecting to clarify thinking
 
5. Organizing all academic work
 
6. Consistently collaborating with peers and instructional staff in a positive manner
 
7. Demonstrating active listening, paying attention, and asking appropriate questions in all classes
 
8. Self-advocacy by seeking help when necessary
 
9. Reflecting on why and how what they are learning in class is relevant to their lives.
 
AVID students are expected to maintain a 75 or higher, and conduct of Satisfactory or higher in all academic classes.
