Introduction to Guitar 

In 2023, SJVA began offering Introduction to Guitar as a middle school and high school elective course. Introduction to Guitar provides students with an opportunity to learn the fundamental skills needed to play and perform guitar. This class will introduce you to entry-level musical concepts such as reading music, learning chords and performing songs. Students will also be exposed to the deep and historical world of Classical Guitar. You will be tasked with learning and performing individual and group repertoire, covering proper guitar technique, sitting position, musicality and historical importance. Students will conduct themselves in a professional manner, learning how to critique colleagues and self-reflect on their own performances as well. Lastly, students will learn about the wide variety of careers available to them in the guitar field! 

Guitar 1 

Guitar 1 is a focus course that dives deeper into the concepts, ideas, and methodologies discussed in Introduction to Guitar. Students will continue their guitar studies, learning advanced solo and group repertoire. Students will understand the performance requirements needed to study an instrument at the college level as well as work on their own solo recitals. Students will begin to explore the world of electric guitar as well as learn how to market themselves as a musician, and how to conduct a private lesson.

SJVA’s Guitar department is committed to exposing students to the world of Guitar and building partnerships with local music shops, venues, and colleges. We are committed to providing students with the resources and hands-on experiences to prepare them for a career in guitar performance and education.
