Middle School Distance Learning Opportunities

Below are a list of resources that SJVA middle school is utilizing to support distance learning.

**6th Grade**
  • Teachers are connecting on Tuesday and Thursdays through zoom with all students. 
  • Learning opportunities are communicated with parents/students through student emails, school messenger and google classroom.
  • Students use clever.com to connect to google classroom, Flocabulary, Achieve3000, Go-Math, Khan Academy, ThatQuiz, Amplify
  • Students connect through Google Classroom for links to zoom meetings, Kahoot, VHL, Studysync, Revision Assistant, Youtube, Nearpod, Quizizz, Brainpop and Waggle.
 
**7th Grade**
  • Teachers connect with students and parents on Tuesdays and Thursdays utilizing zoom streaming along with a School Messenger email reminder of the lesson.
  • Parents and students are notified about all learning opportunities through student emails, School Messenger, and Google Classroom.
  • Students use clever.com to connect to Google Classroom, TCI, Flocabulary, Achieve, Go-Math, Khan Academy, ThatQuiz, Revision Assistant, TurnitIn.com, and Amplify.
  • Students connect through Google Classroom for links to PowerSchool Learning (Haiku), Zoom meetings, Kahoot, Nearpod, Quizziz, BrainPop, Waggle, Youtube, Horrible Histories, DiscoveryKids, Quizzlet, ThingLink, PiktoChart, ck12.org, SmartBoard, and ActiveInspire.
 
**8th Grade**
  • Teachers connect weekly ( days vary) through zoom with all students. Refer to google classroom for more information.
  • Assignments are communicated with parents/students through student emails, school messenger, Aeries email and Google classroom.
  • Students use clever.com to connect to google classroom, TCI, Flocabulary, Achieve, Go-Math, Mappers-Khan Academy, Khan Academy, ThatQuiz, amplify.
  • Students connect through Google Classroom for links to zoom meetings, kahoot, VHL, Studysync, Revision Assistant, nearpod, youtube, quizziz, brain pop, and waggle
 
 
 
Zoom is a video conferencing software that allows teachers to video chat with students. Joining is simple and can be done in a number of ways.
Teachers can give a meeting ID and a password. Once on the zoom website, you can click "Join a meeting" enter the meeting ID, and follow the prompts to connect to your teacher.
Alternatively teachers may send a link which you can click on, that will take you to the meeting that teachers have set up.
There is also a zoom app on the play store and apple store, that allows you to easily use a cellphone to connect to the meetings
Important: If you have a SJVA chromebook, when going to zoom it may direct you to the chrome app store to install the zoom chrome app. This will be block. To use zoom on a SJVA chromebook, go to zoom.us, and join the meeting through the web browser.
 
Clever (Single sign on software - All Middle School)
Clever allows students to quickly and efficiently log in to different student programs. Single sign on means the student has to log in once through the clever portal using their google accounts, and they will have access to all the programs within their dashboard, without having to sign in again.
Students can click on any program in their dashboard (Pictured above) and it will take them directly to the program, and sign them in. It is a centralized location for most of the schools programs, and a great place to start in supporting student learning at home.
 
Achieve 3000 (ELA - All Middle School: Accessed through the clever portal)
Achieve 3000 is an English Language Arts program that gives students access to hundreds of articles on different topics, and then present them questions to test comprehension of the article. Teachers are also able to monitor student progress, and assign different topics to help support learning at home.
 
Amplify Curriculum (Science - All Middle School: Accessed through the clever portal)
Amplify curriculum is the science curriculum that SJVA middle school uses. It can be accessed through the clever portal, and once in the student will be presented with different science articles, and given questions based on what they just learned.
 
My HRW - Go-Math (Math - All Middle School: Accessed through the HRW website)
My HRW is the math curriculum for middle school. It contains an electronic version of the math text book that students can access and complete activities in. Teachers are also able to monitor progress and assign work to help support learning at home.
 
 
Khan Academy (Math - All Grades: Access through the website or through the clever portal)
Khan academy is a widely used math resource that contains hundreds of instructional math videos. Students are able to look up a specific topic they are having trouble with, or can click "Course" and start a course on a topic that they want to try. A course will give them a string of videos, and then present them practice problems to check their understanding. It is a great resource to support learning at home. 
 
Flocabulary (ELA - 6th and 7th Grade: Accessed through the clever portal)
Flocabulary is a learning program for all grades that uses educational hip-hop music to engage students and increase achievement across the curriculum. Teachers at 20,000 schools use Flocabulary’s standards-based videos, instructional activities and student creativity tools to supplement instruction and develop core literacy skills.
 
Kahoot (All Middle School: Accessed through the website)
Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create, share and play learning games or trivia quizzes in minutes. 
 
Thatquiz (All Middle School: Accessed through the clever portal)
Thatquiz is a free service for teachers who want to replace paper tests with online testing. It provides an online grade book providing fast analysis of class and individual student progress. It allows access to a skills site for students, especially useful for math practice.
 
Discovery.com (Science - 6th Grade: Accessed through the website)
Discovery.com is the Discovery Channel's official website. It provides articles and free videos on different topics.

Quizlet (6th Grade: Accessed through the website)
Quizlet covers many different topics, and provides students different tools such as interactive games and flashcards to help students learn

Brainpop (All Subjects - 6th and 7th Grade: Accessed through the website)
BrainPop is a group of educational websites with over 1,000 short animated movies for students in grades K-12 (ages 6 to 17), together with quizzes and related materials, covering the subjects of science, social studies, English, math, engineering and technology, health, and arts and music.

Waggle (ELA - All Middle School: Accessed through the website)
Waggle provides adaptive, state aligned practice for middle school students. Teachers use Waggle to assign goals to students, who then work through assignments to learn individual skills.

TCI subscription (ELA - 7th and 8th Grade: Accessed through the clever portal)
TCI is a K-12 publishing company that creates science and social studies curriculum to enable educators to improve their ability to engage students in a diverse classroom. 

Studysync (ELA - All Middle School: Accessed through the website)
Study sync is the online curriculum used in the high school for ELA. It allows students to find reading and writing opportunities. Teachers have access to present learning opportunities to their students through this software. 

Revision Assistant (ELA - All Middle School: Accessed through the website)
Revision Assistant is an online revision tool for students. It allows for students to submit responses to teacher-assigned writing prompts, receive instant feedback, and share their work and revisions with teachers. 
 
Turnitin (ELA - All Middle School: Accessed through the website)
Turnitin is a software that students use to submit their essays or assignment. The software detects potential plagiarism and checks the integrity of the work. 
 
VHL Central (Spanish - All Middle School: Accessed through the website)
VHL Central is the Spanish curriculum and online textbook.
